Are We Going Into A Tech Bubble?

With over-valuing startups and lots of money being thrown around in the technology sector, many may fear that we are close to a tech bubble that could burst. Excitement around startups and new technologies have made decisions easier for venture capitalists and investors to put their money into future technology.

Can we really say we are in tech bubble? The signs are showing that if we are then it is very different to the last one in 2000. With the success of Instagram which Facebook bought for $1biilion, it shows that some areas of the tech world are succeeding and are not showing signs of slowing down. With Instagram and Facebook now generating healthy revenues, the view of over-inflating are far from the reality. Snapchat, the photo sharing application which reportedly turned down a $3billion offer from Facebook, is growing well and its value would be several times higher today. These are some signs that the technology sector isn’t being over-inflated but showing genuine signs of growth.

On the other hand there have been some examples where some acquisitions have had a negative impact to the industry. Google paid $12.5billion for Motorola which then saw it be sold to Lenova for a much lower value ($3billion). Anticipating growth and competing with tech giants doesn’t also work through acquisitions. Back in 2011, Rupert Murdoch sold the popular social network, MySpace for $35million, only 6% of what News Corp had initially purchased it for. These examples show signs that gambling of short-term success may not get you far.

Overall, my verdict would be that if we are in a tech bubble and in a world of over-inflating acquisitions, then it is very different to the tech bubble which burst in 2000. Some areas of the industry are showing real optimism, whereas other areas are being gambled upon with no realistic long-term growth.

iPhone 6s – What You Need To Know

It’s that time of the year again. The newest iPhones are being released to the world tomorrow. The iPhone has become one of the best selling and more importantly, most loved smartphones ever. Each year Apple makes enhancements to the iPhone which makes us stand in queues and buy the product which we need most in our lives.

You may be thinking that there’s nothing different between the iPhone 6 and 6s. Think again. Apple may not have changed the design but all of the technologies have been upgraded with some killer new features. The iPhone 6s will also come in a Rose Gold colour in addition to the Space Grey, Gold and Silver models. Here are the key new features that will make you order the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus…

3D Touch

Multi-touch screens have become essential to the way we interact with our smartphones. The iPhone 6s has a new screen which adds the ability to interact with it with much more functionality. 3D touch is a new technology which enables the iPhone 6s to recognise how much pressure you are applying to the screen. This will revolutionise how you use your iPhone and make your experience much faster and efficient. There are 3 types of pressure which enables you to interact with your iPhone’s screen..

  • Tap – A simple tap does as it suggests and has no difference to how you would used your iPhone daily
  • Peek – Apply a little more pressure on app icons, messages or mail and you can preview before diving into the content
  • Pop – Once you know what you want to open, apply further pressure and it will open your email, message or photo

Live Photos

Live Photos is a great new feature which brings your photos to life. When taking a photo your iPhone 6s instantly records 1.5 seconds of video either side of your photo which creates a short video. This enable you to relive the moment when you took that picture. This picture can be used as a wallpaper, so when you turn on your iPhone screen your wallpaper comes to life. If you have an Apple Watch, you can use Live Photo pictures to use as your watch face. This feature will create priceless moments for you.

Camera Enhancements

With the improved 12 megapixel camera that the iPhone 6s boasts, you can now shoot 4K quality videos. This will enable you to shoot videos with the highest quality. With 4 times the resolution of 1080p HD your 4K videos will never look better. Also with the feature of a front flash option, you can guarantee you won’t be taking selfies in the dark anymore. The front facing camera has been upgraded to a 5 megapixel camera for great quality FaceTime calls and selfies.

Along with iOS 9, these are the key new features that make the iPhone 6s what it is. The design may not have changed much but the interior along with these killer new features, the iPhone 6s is predicted to the the best selling iPhone ever.

Go order your new iPhone 6s now…

Technology is a lifeline for Syrian refugees

Your smartphone may be a necessity. To the Syrian refugees, they are a lifeline.

The Syrian migrants that are fleeing their homeland for a better and safer life in Europe are facing a difficult task to find security and comfort for their families. One place where they have assistance is with the use of technology. The refugees have been using mapping, social media and messaging applications to aid their journey out of Syria through to safer European countries. The migrants use their smartphones as a lifeline to help them on their travels and even find suitable accommodation.

Keeping in Touch

The refugees have been using free messaging tools such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Viber to keep in touch with their families back home. The migrants have been contacting their loved ones to tell them that they are safe and informing them of their next destination. Social media and messaging applications are a vital source for the refugees to communicate with each other, but more importantly to let their families back home know that they are safe.

Getting around

Mapping services such as Google Maps are constantly used by the refugees to help them navigate. The migrants get all their directions from these services to help them reach safer countries such as Austria, Hungary and Germany and move further away from the troubles in Syria. Their smartphones are vital for them to travel through these countries.

Finding Accommodation

Germany has created a service called Refugees Welcome, which is an ‘AirBnB’ type service to help refugees find accommodation within the country. AirBnB is commonly used to help travellers find great accommodation all around the world. Refugees Welcome is a great platform which allows residents to list spare rooms within the country and allows refugees to find suitable accommodation for themselves.

Technology is playing a big part in helping the Syrian refugees and migrants communicate, navigate and finding suitable accommodation whilst escaping the troubles in their native country. Smartphones are not a luxury, they are a lifeline…

Top 5 Fastest Growing Tech Cities

Technology is all around us and all over the world now. Starting up a new tech business can all depend on where you are located. Whilst Silicon Valley maybe the tech hub of the world, it’s not where you will see the fastest growth. Apple, Google and Facebook maybe based in the west coast of the US, but you may be surprised where you can gain the fastest growth for your tech startup…

As reported by Compass, the fastest growing tech cities for startups are:

1 – Berlin

Germany’s capital has seen a very fast growth to become the world’s fastest growing city in terms of technology startups. With a large influx of investors from venture capital and private equity funds, Berlin has grown to become the best city in the world  to start your tech business.

2 – Bangalore

Bangalore joins Berlin as one the top cities in the world to grow in term its technology and infrastructure. India has been a great country to outsource and grow the IT branch of any business. Bangalore has many tech companies that are based there and is the city with the highest number of engineering graduates in India.

3 – Sao Paulo

Brazil’s tech hub city of Sao Paulo is the fastest growing city in Latin America for tech startups. With the only South American city in the top 5, Sao Paulo has become a great place to begin a tech company. Sao Paulo is preferred to Rio De Janeiro because it is the financial epicentre of Brazil.

4 – London

London is the fourth fastest growing technology city in the world. Berlin took the number 1 spot from London but the UK has seen very fast growth for startups recently. Most tech companies are based in the Shoreditch area of London and range from app developers to e-commerce startups.

5 – Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the third fastest growing tech hub in Europe behind Berlin and London. With a range of business startups in the smart energy, software and digital health industries, Amsterdam is a great place to begin your tech business. Netflix and Uber have recently moved their headquarters to Amsterdam which shows that there are many advantages of starting up your company in Amsterdam.

The Next iPhone – My Rumour Roundup

Rumours. Rumours. Rumours. iPhone 7. iPhone 6s. iPhone 6c. It’s that time of the year where the iPhone rumour mill gathers speed. Everybody wants to know when the next iPhone is coming and what features it could include. There have been many rumours all over the web but nobody knows for sure what is coming. Here’s my roundup of what they are saying…

What will the next iPhone be called? Most likely they will be called the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, rather than the iPhone 7. Apple likes to make incremental improvements to the iPhone the year after a revolutionary change. That’s why it is most likely the next iPhones will incorporate the “s” in the name suggesting minor changes to its design and technology.

The design for the next iPhone will more than likely be the same or very similar to the current iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. So far there have been no evidence in the grapevine that suggests a change in screen size or shape. We may see a new Rose Gold colour added to the lineup along with the standard Gold, Silver and Space Grey models.

New features could include:

  • A9 processor which will make the iPhone faster, more reliable and improve efficiency
  • A 12-megapixel camera is rumoured which will keep the same design but shoot higher quality pictures
  • Force Touch technology is most likely to feature, which is used on the Apple Watch for additional options
  • Improvements to Touch ID is likely with better accuracy and maybe more capabilities
  • Unlikely, but there is unconfirmed gossip suggesting a sapphire crystal display could feature

Release date

The most likely release date for the next iPhone is mid to late September 2015. Apple has always released its iPhones in September in order to ramp up excitement towards Christmas. Expect iOS 9 to be released a few days before the next iPhone release.

Other Products/Services

Apple normally doesn’t announce new products on their own. Rumours are gathering pace that a revamped Apple TV set-top box will be unveiled. The current Apple TV design hasn’t been changed for 3 years, so a new streaming set-top box which could incorporate a Force Touch remote is possible. Apple could release an actual TV range in 2016 as it looks to enter the television hardware market. Currently there has been no news on an updated iPad or iPad Mini.

That rounds up the rumours that I have heard. If you’ve heard or seen any new gossip, feel free to let me know in the comments…

Apple Pay – All you need to know

Apple Pay will eventually replace your wallet. When Tim Cook launched Apple Pay last year it has escalated into the most simplest, secure and speedy method of making payments on the go and within apps. Apple Pay has been a big success in the US since its launch in October 2014, and last week Apple Pay launched in the UK. Here are all the details you need to know….

How do I set it up?

If you are an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or Apple Watch user then Apple Pay is for you. Setting up your device for Apple is very simple. Make sure you are on the latest iPhone software (currently iOS 8.4) and go to the Settings App. Scroll down to ‘Passbook & Apple Pay’ and then tap ‘Add Credit or Debit Card’. You’ll then be asked for your Apple ID password, then click ‘Next’ in the top right corner.

A camera window will appear where you need to place your debit or credit card in the window so it can scan your cards details. Check your details and enter your card’s security code. Now all you need to do is activate the card which can be done via a call or text and you’re ready to go. The process is similar within the Apple Watch app for Apple Watch users.

Please note that not all UK banks are offering the service at present. American Express, MBNA, Nationwide, NatWest, RBS, Santander and Ulster Bank customers are able to use Apple Pay. HSBC will launch on 28th July and Barclays later in the year.

Where and how can I use it?

You can use Apple Pay wherever there is a contactless payment terminal. Most retailers such as Boots, Costa, McDonalds, Nando’s, Subway and many more are offering the service. Also if you live in London and use Transport for London to get around, then you can use Apple Pay via the Oyster Card terminal to pay for your travel. In the UK, there is a £20 payment limit which will increase to £30 in September 2015.

Using Apple Pay is very simple. On your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, simple bring your device close to the contactless pay terminal and your phone will ask for your fingerprint on Touch ID. Simply place your finger on the fingerprint sensor and you’re done. You’ve paid using Apple Pay. You’ll hear a sound and your phone will vibrate once payment is confirmed. With Apple Watch, simply double click the side button and you’re cards will appear. Bring your Apple Watch close to the pay terminal and you’ll hear a sound and feel a vibration once complete.

How secure is it?

Apple Pay is very secure. Even more secure than your PIN number. PIN numbers can be easily guessed and stolen which can lead to fraudulent activity. As Apple Pay uses Touch ID and your fingerprint it makes it very difficult to copy or duplicate. No card details are passed on to the merchant which keeps you in total control of your personal information. Authorisation can only be done with your fingerprint so this makes your payments using Apple Pay very secure.

Have any questions about Apple Pay? Ask away in the comments below…
