Hurrah! Google has released its Maps application for the iPhone! Apple’s WWDC 2012 – What you need to know

Apple unveils new MacBooks, previews Mountain Lion and iOS 6

Apple held its first annual developers conference without the visionary that is, Steve Jobs. As Tim Cook’s first WWDC as Apple’s CEO, the technology giant were expected to announce a few updates and previews to hardware and software. The main updates were a new range of MacBooks, and previews of Mac OS X Mountain Lion and iOS 6. Below is a summary of the keynote announcements:

New MacBooks

  • Hardware updates to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks, which include faster processors and USB 3.0

  • A brand new Retina Display MacBook Pro, with flash memory and faster processors

  • The new Retina MacBook Pro has 5 million pixels, 3 million more pixels than your HD TV!

  • The new notebook is even thinner and lighter than the current MacBook Pro, which helps portability

Mac OS X Mountain Lion

  • The key features previewed were bringing Notes, Reminders, Messages and Notification Center from iOS to the Mac

  • Also Dictation, which came to the New iPad in March, has been introduced enabling you to speak your text

  • New features for Safari, which include multi-device syncing and unified search (which is similar to Google Chrome)

  • Priced at $19.99 and due for release in July

iOS 6

  • A new Maps app, which wil replace Google Maps, with 3D maps, ‘Sat Nav’ capabilities and Siri support

  • Facebook integration, just like Twitter in iOS 5, you can update your status, post a picture and share a link, without going to the Facebook app

  • Updated Siri, to include international local searches (finally!), opening apps, and intelligent app searches

  • Siri will also come to the New iPad, enabling you to ask it to get things done

  • FaceTime calls can now be made over 3G as well as WiFi, so you can video call from anywhere

Overall, I feel this year’s WWDC keynote was as expected and in line with the rumours. Nobody expected a new iPhone, but instead new MacBooks and previews of software. I think Tim Cook’s first WWDC keynote without Steve Jobs, was a success, and I think Apple are continue to move forward with Steve Jobs’s vision at its core.

Apple unveil the new iPad

Apple have unveiled the third-generation iPad, and it comes with some great new features. With the ever successful iPad 2 outselling all other tablet devices, the New iPad will take the market by storm. Below are the key new features that make up the New iPad:

The new features are:

  • Retina Display – A High Definition screen that has more pixels than your HD TV! The pictures and videos that you see will look unbeilivable with this display

  • An A5X processor – A faster processor than the iPad 2, will four times the graphics peformance. This will make gaming and everyday tasks even faster

  • An improved camera – The camera will be the same as the iPhone 4S which will create simply amazing pictures

  • 1080p video recording – With HD recording, you will be able to create amazing sharp, smooth videos

  • 4G LTE  – In North America, 4G iPad’s will be available with lightning fast internet speeds when out and about

  • Same 10 hour battery life – Even with all these new features, the iPad maintains its amazing 10 hour batter life

Prices – Currently same as iPad 2 prices (from $499 – subject to differ for international stores)

In my opinion, the New iPad will be a big selling tablet, and I think it will outsell the iPad 2. I feel the Retina (HD) display will be the key selling point, as I think this lacked in the iPad 2. Seeing images, viewing text and watching videos on a screen with more pixels than your HD TV is truly unbelievable. My verdict is that if your are looking to buy an iPad, then the New iPad should be a must buy!
